the card
A card that spends against what you hold.
Your spending power comes from the collateral you lock. The card draws on it. Nothing is sold to fund a charge.
before you tap
You see the number before the card uses it.
Spending power is shown in the account at all times: what is locked, what each asset counts for after its haircut, and what is available now.
A charge above what is available is declined. So is a charge that would push your collateral below the required level relative to your drawn balance after the charge. The same check runs on a coffee and on a flight.
Because spending power is derived from prices, it moves. What is available this morning can be less this afternoon. The account shows the current figure, and the card is checked against the figure at the moment you tap.
How spending power is worked outcontrols
Three controls, all yours, all from the account.
- Freeze
- Freeze the card and every charge is declined until you unfreeze it. Both take effect from the account, and a frozen card stays yours: nothing about your collateral or your balance changes.
- Spend limit
- Set a daily limit in dollars. A charge that would take the day past it is declined, whatever your spending power. Change it or remove it whenever you like.
- Close
- Close the card permanently. A closed card cannot be reopened; if you want a card again, a new one is issued with a new number. Closing the card does not close the account or touch what you hold.
Actions that expose sensitive detail, such as showing the card's full number, ask you to confirm it is you again before they run.
what it costs
Stated once, on the pricing page.
A drawn balance carries a cost until it is repaid. The disclosure figure, a calculator that works it out to the month, and the list of every other cost an account of this kind can have, decided or not, are on the pricing page. A cost that has not been set says so there; this page does not carry a figure of its own.

Where we are silent, we are silent on purpose.
Nothing on this page names a card network, an issuing bank, or a phone wallet. When each of those can be stated as a fact about a card in a member's hand, it will be stated here. Until then the page says what the card does and stops.
